The range of competence of the ministry of Home Affairs is fixed by the Government regulation.
The main tasks of the Ministry concern local affairs, municipal finances, municipal planning and urban development, the control of the accounts of the communes, civil security, internal security, immigration and international protection.

Review of the national warning system: unannounced zonal SMS alerts
An unannounced test of the zonal SMS alert took place on Friday 22 March 2024 in the municipalities of Differdange, Pétange, Käerjeng, Sanem, Bourscheid, Tandel, Diekirch, Erpeldange-sur-Sûre, Ettelbruck, Schieren, Colmar-Berg and Bettendorf.

On Monday 4 March 2024, the government will continue to implement its strategy for testing the warning and information system for the population by carrying out monthly tests of the siren network and the GouvAlert mobile application.

Information on the extension of the temporary protection certificate
In response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Luxembourg, like all EU Member States, applied the temporary protection mechanism for people fleeing Ukraine starting in March 2022. This mechanism, initially applicable for a period of 12 months from its activation and then prolonged until 4 March 2024, has been extended once again.
